Ratan Tata

Ratan Tata is a prominent Indian industrialist, philanthropist, and former chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group, one of India’s largest conglomerates. Born on December 28, 1937, Ratan Tata is known for his visionary leadership and contribution to business and society.

Throughout his tenure as chairman of the Tata Group from 1991 to 2012, Ratan Tata oversaw significant expansion and diversification, guiding the group into new sectors such as telecommunications, information technology, and steel. He led several major acquisitions, including the purchase of iconic brands like Jaguar Land Rover and Tetley, which helped elevate the Tata Group’s global presence.

Ratan Tata, who led the group into some notable acquisitions, starting from Tetley for $450 million in 2000, to steelmaker Corus in 2007 and the landmark Jaguar Land Rover in 2008 for $2.3 billion.

During Ratan Tata’s earlier tenure, the group’s revenues grew manifold, totalling $100.09 billion (around Rs 475,721 crore) in 2011-12 from a turnover of a mere Rs 10,000 crore in 1991.

The veteran industrialist retired on December 29, 2012, when he turned 75 and Cyrus Mistry was appointed as his successor. But he returned in 2016 to replace Mistry.

Ratan Tata is also recognized for his commitment to corporate social responsibility and sustainable development. Under his leadership, the Tata Group initiated numerous philanthropic initiatives focusing on education, healthcare, rural development, and environmental conservation.

In addition to his business acumen, Ratan Tata is admired for his integrity, humility, and leadership style, which prioritizes ethical values and long-term sustainability. He has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to industry and society, including the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, two of India’s highest civilian awards.
